Mascherano: We will focus on Chelsea first

Javier Mascherano believes that it would be wrong for Barcelona to think about El Clasico as they need to focus on the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea.

Barcelona have a demanding week ahead of them as they face Chelsea on Wednesday and then play Real Madrid on Saturday in a match that could very well decide the fate of the La Liga title.

But the Argentinean believes that his side cannot get ahead of themselves and need to concentrate on the first hurdle which is the match against Chelsea. He believes that the European game against the west London outfit will be as challenging as the title clash as it's the semi-final of a major tournament.

"We want to put the league out of our minds a bit and focus on Chelsea, because we have the chance of reaching the final of Europe's top competition," he told the club website.

"It'll be a really difficult tie that will depend a lot on getting a good result in the first leg against a team that has always been characterised by their tremendous physical strength, and which has some really experienced players.

"The main thing right now is Wednesday's match. Afterwards, we'll think about the league and Real Madrid.

"It would be a really big mistake to focus on Real Madrid first, because Wednesday's match is very difficult and will go a long way to deciding the tie."

The Catalan side needed to come back from behind in their recent match against Levante and the defensive midfielder commended the resolve showed by his team-mates in a surprisingly philosophical comment.

"Faith is the last thing you lose and we have faith in what we can do. Then it depends, because you never know in football, but it's important we have the right dynamic.

"Obviously the victory [against Levante] in the Ciudad de Valencia strengthens us, above all because we maintained the team spirit. Our faith is alive and well and we won't be beaten and we keep fighting against the odds."

"We are all aware that even if we win all our matches in the league we still depend on other results. Real Madrid have a four-point lead and we'll have to see if we're capable of beating them next weekend. It's not in our hands.

"But what's real right now is Wednesday, Stamford Bridge, Chelsea."
