Leverkusen followed up their 4-0 win in the home match with a valuable away point to remain two points clear of the Ukrainians in second place in Group A.
With a home match against Manchester United and a trip to Real Sociedad to come, the Germans still have work to do to qualify, but avoiding defeat on Tuesday night has made their task a whole lot easier.
And it was 21-year-old Leno who almost single-handedly kept Shakhtar out at times.
Leverkusen defender Giulio Donati told Bild: "Bernd was unbelievable. This is a golden point for us."
Another defender Omer Toprak added: "We know that in him we have a super keeper."
Sporting director Rudi Voller was also full of praise for the Germany Under-21 international, saying: "Bernd was outstanding, we are very, very happy to have him."
Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu was just as impressed.
"We had some good chances, but Bayer's keeper Leno was fantastic," he said. "It was his day."
