Greuther Furth vs Freiburg Preview

Freiburg go into their penultimate game of the season boosted by the news that coach Christian Streich has extended his contract.

In spite of a swath of announced departures from the Black Forest club this summer, Streich has affirmed his commitment to the club "long term", according to an announcement from the club.

"Why should I leave?" said Streich at a press conference. "There are many, many reasons to work in Freiburg."

Streich recently turned down an approach from Bundesliga rivals Schalke, making it clear at the same time that money is not his motivation.

"No economic things could outweigh the atmosphere with the people I work with here," he added.

Schalke may be playing in the Champions League next season, but that could also depend on his own team.

Going into Saturday's game against Furth, Freiburg trail the Royal Blues by four points.

A win in Bavaria combined with Schalke drawing or losing their last home game of the season against Stuttgart would set the stage for a potential Champions League showdown at the Dreisamstadion on the final day of the season.

Victory tomorrow could at least secure Freiburg a place in the Europa League next season, but relegated Furth are not likely to do them any favours.

Since their relegation to the second division was confirmed, they have beaten Stuttgart away from home and are now looking for that elusive first home victory in the top flight having picked up 17 of their 21 points this season on their travels.
