Still only 20, Alaba has already established himself as a key player at the Allianz Arena and opened the scoring in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Juventus in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Although the versatile Austria international can play in both defence in midfield, he has made the left-back spot his own and Sammer believes he is one of the best in that position at the moment.
"David is a very, very important player for the club," he said on the club's official website.
"Even at a very young age, he's already one of the best left-backs in the world."
Nonetheless, Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes believes the youngster can only get better.
"David's playing at a very high level at the moment," he added. "But he still has room to improve."
Bayern can wrap up the Bundesliga title this weekend if they manage to beat Eintracht Frankfurt, although a draw would still be enough if second-placed Borussia Dortmund fail to win at home to Augsburg.
