Furth seek to avoid worst ever start

Tasmania Berlin will be on many people's lips in the city of Furth on Saturday, although the club from the capital are not Greuther Furth's opponents.

Tasmania are the side who hold the record for the worst ever Bundesliga season, going down in 1966 with just eight points, which would equate to 10 points since the league turned to three points for a win.

They scored just 15 goals and conceded a record 108 on their way down after just one year in the top flight and both Furth and their opponents on Saturday, Augsburg, will be seeking to avoid a similar ignominy.

The two Bavarian clubs are tied together on eight points for the season - Furth have conceded 27 and Augsburg 28 - and a win for either would at least ensure they do not beat Tasmania's record.

"It's not a matter of life or death, but a great deal is at stake," said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl, summing up the importance of the Bavarian derby.

"We want to put everything into this game to win it. We will have 11 warriors on the field who will do everything to bring the three points back to Augsburg."

That is something they have yet to do all season.

Augsburg's solitary win this season came at home while Furth have only won once all year, and that was on the road.

The weakest team at home therefore faces the weakest team away so an extra man would certainly help, and Furth coach Mike Buskens hopes his club's fans will provide that in the predicted freezing conditions.

"We hope the fans get behind us," he said. "We want to do everything we can to make it a successful game."

And he also hopes their efforts are rewarded after lamenting that his side "do not have the points we deserve for what we have done" so far this season.
