Defending champions Borussia Dortmund head into their domestic meeting with Bayern Munich trailing the league-leading Bavarians by 11 points. As such, victory for Jupp Heynckes' men could see Dortmund fall further behind second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and make it more difficult for the club to retain their title.
Speaking to Sky, Hitzfield admitted that he hoped Jurgen Klopp's men emerged from the game unscathed, as he believed the chase for domestic glory would be over for Dortmund if they lost.
"If Bayern win, the title is decided and the Bundesliga becomes boring, however, if Dortmund win, Bayern could stumble again and Dortmund definitely have the quality to beat Bayern," Hitzfield explained.
"Bayern versus Dortmund has always been a real classic, just like Real Madrid against Barcelona in Spain."
The Champions League-winning boss picked out Marco Reus as a player who could turn the game in Dortmund's favour, but Hitzfield also warned Klopp's team that Bayern's hunger would drive them to seek victory.
"Marco Reus was a great transfer, probably even better than [Shinji] Kagawa. Dortmund are confident after their past games against Bayern and can beat them on a good day," he stated.
"Bayern have never been as hungry as they are now because there has never been so much pressure on them."
