Afellay is currently at the Veltins-Arena on loan from La Liga giants Barcelona and has been a key factor behind their strong start to the campaign, which has seen them rise up to second in the league and top UEFA Champions League Group B.
The Netherlands international has already weighed in with four goals in 13 appearances in all competition so far this season, including one in their impressive 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Champions League two weeks ago, and Heldt admits the Royal Blues will have to consider securing his services on a permanent basis if he keeps up his level of performance.
"Will we keep him after the season? If his perfomances remain good then there is a good chance," he told Bild.
Afellay began his career at PSV Eindhoven, where he won four Eredivisie titles, before joining Barca, with whom he won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with in the 2010/11 season.
The 26-year-old has also represented the Dutch at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.
