Gomez has been unable to help his side but they have done remarkably well in his absence. Barring surprise defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and BATE Borisov, they have performed well and registered continual victories over the period.

Moreover, Mario Mandzukic has more than filled in for the tall German striker as he has notched nine goals in all competitions this season.

Nevertheless, Gomez returns to first team training eager to make a return to regular football as soon as possible. Heynckes, however, fears that the ankle injury that the 27-year-old faced may not have healed completely. The 67-year-old coach wants the Germany international to undergo a complete recovery before putting his name up for selection for future matches/

"Gomez is doing himself no favours if he tries to return too quickly," Heynckes stated to AM magazine.

"Sometimes you have to tell players to slow down. This is the case with Mario, we want him 100 per cent before he returns to the first team.

"He has worked with the best fitness trainers in order to get him back. 11 weeks is a long time to be out of football for any player, so it was nice to see him back in training."

Gomez, for his part, stated that he was relieved to be able to attend his first training session in many months last Saturday.

"It's fun to watch the boys and a good feeling to be back involved, even if it is bitter for me not to be out there."

Bayern play Kaiserslautern in the second round of the DFB Pokal Cup on Wednesday night.
