Afellay has largely featured from the bench at Schalke since arriving at the Veltins-Arena from Barcelona over the summer. But a goal against Wolfsburg in his side's 3-0 win over the weekend coupled with some good performances seem to have raised his profile in recent weeks.
The 26-year-old was constantly harangued by injuries during his time at the Camp Nou and really needs to shine in the Bundesliga in order to secure his future in a Barcelona squad bursting with midfield talent. But the Holland international understands the need to remain focused and prove his talent through his performances at Schalke.
"I'm feeling very well and I'm slowly gaining match rhythm. It's hard to remain patient. I really love the game and I'm raring to go," Afellay told De Telegraaf.
"I know that I can add something to the team. I understand the coach's point of view, though. I have to prove my worth whenever I get playing time.
"It's the same with the national team. Of course, there's a lot of competition, but that's only normal when you're surrounded by the best players Netherlands have."
Afellay is currently with the Holland squad as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Romania.
