Dortmund, who were been crowned Bundesliga champions in the last two seasons, have had an indifferent start to the new campaign, picking up just 12 points in their opening seven games.
Bayern on the other hand have claimed maximum points for their matches and currently sit comfortably at the top of the table, five points ahead of second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.
Nonetheless, Gotze believes it is still early on in the campaign, and that BVB have what it takes to overtake their title rivals.
"Bayern have a signficant lead but we can still catch up with them," he told Bild. "They're not unassailable yet.
"We have no reason to fear them. We will keep on trying to win our own games. We will have to wait and see how everything else pans out."
Dortmund did trail the Bavarian outfit by eight points at one stage last season, but the Germany international insists that does not mean the same scenario will unfold again this term.
"Every season is different," Gotze added. "We cannot just say, 'Right, this is where we start a series of victories'.
"We can only blame ourselves for this situation. We have made mistakes. However, we are on the right path again."
The 20-year-old made his debut at the Signal Iduna Park in the 2009/10 season and has gone on to win 18 caps for Germany already.
