After Jefferson Farfan had put them ahead at the Veltins-Arena in the 33rd minute, the hosts made a flying start to the second half and doubled their lead a minute after the break through Ibrahim Afellay, before sewing up all three points when Roman Neustadter grabed a third two minutes before the hour mark.
Speaking after the game, Heldt was effusive in his praise of the Royal Blues, who had been disappointing in their previous two games.
"I was pleased with the way we played," he said on the club's official website. "There was no evidence of any of the things we criticised in the previous two matches.
"When you consider the energy-sapping schedule we've had, I'm very happy with the team's performance.
"The boys fought their way into the game, took a deserved lead and never let up. We've earned ourselves a short break [due to the international matches] and then we go again."
Heldt insisted he knew the three points were in the game after watching the way Schalke kicked on in the second half, and singled out both Farfan and Afellay for praise.
"When we scored the second, I knew we'd win," he added. "You sensed the lads wanted to keep going - and that's what they did.
"It was a very good battling performance. All the players pushed hard and so the win was well deserved in my eyes.
"Jeff [Farfan] had an outstanding game and Ibi [Afellay] took another important step with his display. He was very busy, both in attack and defence, and repeatedly showed what a class player he is.
"I'm delighted for him that he finished with such assurance. Long may it continue."
Following the international break, Schalke return to action on October 20 with a trip to defending champions Borussia Dortmund.
