Leverkusen call for Schurrle support

Bayer Leverkusen joint coach Sami Hyypia has called on fans to get behind Andre Schurrle and not criticise the Germany international, who has not scored since May.

Football News: Andre Schurrle.

Schurrle missed a glorious opportunity to end that drought and open his account for the season against Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend, but he missed a penalty which would have earned his side three points.

However, Hyypia refused to blame the 21-year-old, who he is convinced will be a matchwinner for his side in the future, if not on Wednesday at Augsburg.

"When you are going through a difficult time, you need really positive backing," he said.

"Andre will get chances again and I am convinced that he will soon be scoring the goals that we need."

Leverkusen need goals from any outlet right now, having scored only four to languish in 13th position in the Bundesliga with just four points from the first four games of the season.

"We need the points desperately," added Hyypia.

"So we will be going to Augsburg to win. They have not had an ideal start to the season either and they will fight for 90 minutes and make it difficult for us."

Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl, who is still waiting for his first win in charge of the Bavarians, said: "Every single one of us is disappointed and unhappy, including me.

"We are on a learning curve in which we have got to eradicate our errors in order to get a win as soon as possible.

"We got too many minor things wrong in our first games, which led to us only getting one point."

One way to improve that may be to make changes, and one of them may be forced upon him with Sebastian Langkamp suffering an ankle injury in training.
