Nonetheless, Holtby believes their chances of recording a victory over their rivals have improved since the last time both sides met.
"Our advantage now is that we are more flexible and less predictable," the 21-year-old told Bild. "It is time for a derby victory."
Draxler was equally optimistic of the Royal Blues' prospects of success in the new campaign.
"We have enough quality," he added. "We must not hide from the major players and teams and be smarter this season."
Schalke kick off the season with an away game against Hannover on August 26.
