The 21-year-old, who was born in Germany to English parents, has previously revealed his desire to one day play in the Barclays Premier League.
And while Holtby is currently in talks over a possible contract extension at Schalke, he refused to say for sure that he will be staying at the Veltins-Arena in the long term.
"Discussions are in progress," he told Kicker. "I cannot say more.
"I will stay at Schalke for at least another year."
One thing that might help convince the playmaker to put pen to paper to a new deal is the fact that the Royal Blues will be playing Champions League football this season, something that greatly excites him.
"I want to play the new season at Champions League level," Holtby added.
"I'm healthy, I feel physically very well and I'm developing real enthusiasm.
"I am a young player and I do not need four weeks of rest, as my head would go crazy."
Holtby established himself as an important player for the club after Huub Stevens last season, but is expected to play an even more-integral role this year following the summer departure of Raul to Al Sadd.
