Martinez, who is equally adept playing in defence, has been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena all summer long, but Bilbao are currently unwilling to budge on their reported asking price of €40million.

Bayern have long stated they would not be held to ransom in their bids to sign Martinez, as well as Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender, but Sammer admits the club may be willing to fork out a 'crazy' sum in order to stay competitive with the rest of Europe's top sides.

"Right now, we're not doing it because it's crazy," the ex-Germany international told Kicker, when asked about a possible bid for Martinez.

"But if we want to do things on the pitch, then we must be crazy."

The 23-year-old Martinez has been at Bilbao since 2006 and was part of the Spain squad that won both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.
