Mintal left Nurnberg two years ago after eight years in which he became a firm fans' favourite, not least for winning the Bundesliga's top goalscorer award in 2005, but also for his contribution to the side's DFB-Pokal triumph two seasons later.
After a year with Hansa Rostock, Mintal has now returned to Nurnberg to play for their reserve team next season and begin his coaching career, and he got to see how much he is liked in Bavaria.
"I am just so delighted and satisfied," he said after leaving the field to a standing ovation in the 62nd minute.
Mintal scored from the penalty spot to put Nurnberg 2-1 up before Jakub Blaszczykowski levelled for Jurgen Klopp's double winners.
Sebastian Polter and Mike Frantz added a third and a fourth to give Nurnberg a resounding victory.
Elsewhere, Naldo made his Wolfsburg debut in a 4-2 win over fourth-division side Germania Halberstedt and Hoffenheim beat local rivals Waldhof Mannheim 2-0 while Borussia Monchengladbach were held to a 2-2 draw by Birmingham City.
