The team is currently training in the Italian province of Trentino and Heynckes spoke at a press conference ahead of the club's upcoming tour of China.
He was dismissive of suggestions that Bayern were not playing to their fullest potential last season allowing arch-rivals Dortmund to complete a league and cup double. And he remarked how the Bayern side from the previous season had played one of the best seasons in the history of the club in order to back up his claims.
"Of course we know that when you finish runners-up in three competitions, you have got to change something," he stated.
"But we got 73 points - in 2010, 70 were enough for us to win the league. We kept 18 clean sheets, in 2010 we only had eight. We had a better goal difference.
"It's just the other team were better than us and that was our problem.
"In the second half of the season, we picked up three points more than we did in the first half of the season, when we were three points clear at the top of the table.
"All of that doesn't count for anything because all that counts today is whether you win any titles."
The coach also allayed fears that French star Franck Ribery could be nursing an injury from Euro 2012 after failing to show up for training at the Italian camp. Heynckes revealed that it was a logistical decision to not call up the player for pre-season training and stated that the winger had been given specific instructions in order to ensure that he will be in prime condition for the start of the new season.
"Everybody involved in Euro 2012 has had 23 full days off, plus their return from the Euros and their journey back to Munich.
"That is why Franck Ribery was back at the Säbener Straße training ground yesterday working again.
"Why should I order him to come to Trentino for just one and a half days? That would be counter-productive in my eyes.
"I don't leave anything to chance. Franck Ribery does not need any special fitness programme. He has been given his homework, just like the Germany internationals, to prepare them for the acid test.
"Everything is well considered, well timed and optimally prepared."
Bayern will play friendlies against Beijing Guoan and Wolfsburg in the next two weeks and they face rivals Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup on August 12.
