The Netherlands international is currently one of the most highly-rated strikers in the continent after finishing last season as the league's top scorer with 29 goals, as he fired Schalke to a third-placed finish and UEFA Champions League football.
However, Huntelaar only has one more year on his current deal with the club and has recently been linked with a move to several of Europe's top clubs.
Nonetheless, Heldt believes it is only a matter of time before the 28-year-old officially extends his stay in Gelsenkirchen.
"He knows we want to extend his contract and I can very well imagine that happening," Heldt told RevierSport.
"We already spoke a lot with him about it ahead of the European Championship. The talks with him and his management were very clear, so I see no need to push things now."
Since joining Schalke from AC Milan in 2010, Huntelaar has forged a reputation as one of Europe's deadliest strikers, although he didn't have the most enjoyable of campaigns at Euro 2012 as the Dutch fell to a group stage exit.
