Christian Lell is one of four Hertha Berlin players to be shown the door this summer following the club's relegation to the second division.
Lell, Patrick Ebert, Andreas Ottl and Andre Mijatovic have all been told they can find themselves new clubs.
The decision to part company with Lell comes a day after the player was banned for five matches.
Lell was punished for both insulting referee Wolfgang Stark and gross misconduct after being accused of spitting at opponent Assani Lukimya during a controversial relegation play-off match against Fortuna Dusseldorf.
An original ban of six matches was reduced on appeal, meaning Lell will miss the next five competitive games for whomever he plays next season.
His release from Berlin came "after days of intensive discussions between (director of sport) Michael Preetz and (coach) Jos Luhukay regarding the composition of the squad for next season," according to the club.
"These are the first decisions," added a statement on their website.
