Obraniak could debut against Augsburg

Werder Bremen could field new signing Ludovic Obraniak in their side which travels to Augsburg this Saturday.

The northern Germany side completed a deal for the French midfielder, who joins on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Bordeaux.

"Ludovic has a strong left foot and I think he feels more at home as an attacking midfielder," said Bremen coach Robin Dutt.

"He can play on the wings too and he will give further strength to our attack."

Bremen's director of sport Thomas Eichin added: "We're delighted to have been able to convince Ludovic to join us. We rate him a lot, he has a lot of experience and he was one of the top players for Bordeaux."

Bremen can do with more firepower from their midfield as they travel to Augsburg with one of the worst scoring records in the Bundesliga so far this season.

Only four clubs have scored fewer than their 23, although opponents Augsburg have only managed to find the back of the net one extra time.

The biggest difference between the two sides, which explains Augsburg's five-point advantage, is the fact the Bavarians have conceded 10 fewer than Bremen.

Keeping that record intact will be the duty of Alexander Manninger, who is set to return to the Augsburg goal due to an injury to Marwin Hitz.

The 36-year-old missed the start of the season due to injury but when he returned, he was only able to keep his place for six games before Hitz was restored as coach Markus Weinzier's number one.

Now, the Austrian gets a second chance.

"Of course everybody wants to play in the back of their mind, but it's not the case that you hope somebody gets injured so I can come on," he told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper.

"The coach tried something out and he changed things, and you've just got to accept that."

Hitz could miss more than just Saturday's game, giving Manninger a chance to prove himself and perhaps regain his number one shirt for the rest of the season.
