Badstuber still has World Cup hope

Bayern Munich's Holger Badstuber has not written off his chances of a World Cup appearance as he continues work his way back from torn cruciate knee ligaments.

The 24-year-old has undergone surgery four times since damaging his ligaments in November 2012.

He has travelled with Bayern into their winter training camp in Doha and is stepping up his rehabilitation, and he believes he will soon be back out on the field and not in the fitness room.

"It's up to me, I have to decide when I feel it is right, but I'm leaving that open," he said at a press conference.

"I have everything that I need to make the next step and I can move things up at any time. The priority is getting healthy again.

"I want to be playing again. I miss the grass, I miss the game."

While Badstuber will not be fit for the league restart later this month, he has not given up hope of returning during the second half of the season.

Once that step has been taken, he can then think about a return to the Germany team, perhaps in time for a trip to Brazil in the summer.

"I do have that wish, but I'm not putting myself under any pressure," Badstuber said. "There are a lot of things which must all come together for that to happen."
