Chonburi, who were runners-up last season, recorded a 3-1 win at home to Bangkok Glass, who failed to get a positive result in their first game since appointing Attaphol Puspakom as their new coach.
Thailand international Anucha Kitpongsri fired the Sharks ahead in the 26th minute, before Thiago Cunha doubled their tally on the half-hour mark to give his side a comfortable lead.
The Brazilian striker then grabbed his second of the game four minutes later to make it 3-0, and although the Glass Rabbits managed to pull one back through Pravin Boonyong's 38th-minute effort, Chonburi played out the remainder of the game to pick up all three points.
The result was enough to see them move two points behind defending champions Muangthong United, who were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Bangkok United.
Sompong Soleb struck in the 30th minute to give the hosts the lead, but although the Twin Qilins equalised seven minutes after the break through a Dagno Siaka effort, they were unable to find a winner and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Buriram United are also two points behind Muangthong and second on the table, ahead of Chonburi on goal difference, after toiling to a 2-1 victory away to Samut Songkhram.
An own-goal from Suksayam Chanmaneewech had gifted the Thunder Castle the lead in the 14th minute, but Gilbert Komsoon's equaliser in the 72nd minute looked to have earned the hosts a valuable point.
However, Carmelo Gonzalez struck with his 8th league goal of 2013 three minutes from time to hand Buriram maximum points.
Over at the Saraburi Stadium, an injury-time goal from Seydou Kone earned Songkhla United a 1-1 draw against Osotspa Saraburi.
After both sides had struggled to break the deadlock, Anthony Moura-Komenan looked to have scored the winner when he fired Osotspa in front in the 84th minute, but Kone equalised right at the death to deny the hosts what would have been their third win of the season.
In Sunday's final game, Police United and Chiangrai United played out a 0-0 draw at the Thammasat Stadium.
