The 42-year-old, who used to play for Scottish giants Rangers, was most recently in charge of Ayr United, whom he twice led to promotion to the Scottish First Division, and fills the void left by Edwin Cabalida.

Apart from the obvious task of guiding Global to a successful league title defence, Reid will also have his hands full with their participation in the 2013 AFC President's Cup, which marks the first time a Filipino club side will take part in a major continental competition.

Just last week, the club's application to play in the tournament for "emerging football nations" in Asia was accepted by AFC, and they will now have the chance to face off against sides from Cambodia, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei and Turkmenistan.

In a statement on their official website, Global stated they "have never had a coach in the calibre of Reid, who has had a credible playing career before taking up a managerial role with Ayr United".

Club chairman Dan Palami added: "His experience will give the club a lot of confidence."

Reid is scheduled to arrive in Philippines over the next seven days and his first game at the helm of Global could come in the PFF-Smart National Club Championship Round-of-16 tie against Manila Nomads.
