Jong, nicknamed 'The People's Rooney', first caught the attention of world football after an impressive performance for the Chollima in the when they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brazil in the group stages  2006 World Cup.

The 28-year-old joined Cologne last January as a backup striker for an injured Lukas Podolski but has yet to score for the club after nine appearances in over a year and has been linked with a move to the K-League since last November.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Ulsan Hyundai Tigers were both reported to be interested in the player but Jong has previously indicated a preference for the Bluewings, who are considered one of the most popular clubs in Korea.

Officials from the club confirmed that Jong will sign for them pending medical tests, which will be taken next week.

"We've finalized talks with Koln over the transfer fee for Jong Tae-se," the official told Yonhap News Agency.

"He will arrive in South Korea as early as next Monday for medical tests."

It was reported that Suwon will pay Cologne 300,000 euros (US$395,850) for the player while Jong's salary is reportedly around 400 million won (US$376,000).

Jong will become the second North Korean to play for Suwon Bluewings in recent years after international team mate An Yong-hak, who has also previously played for the club from 2008 to 2009.
