Mariners go top with McBreen double

A second-half Daniel McBreen double fired the Central Coast Mariners to the top of the A-League with a 2-0 win at derby rivals Newcastle Jets.

The league's top marksman returned to haunt his hometown club and take his goal tally to nine for the season.

The 35-year-old opened the scoring on 49 minutes when he struck a sweet strike on the half-volley after full-back Josh Rose crossed from the left.

McBreen then continued his recent purple patch, and ensured his side replaced Adelaide United at the top, with a perfectly-placed header after 66 minutes.

Defeat for the Jets mean they have taken just a single point from their past four games, with marquee signing Emile Heskey goalless during that barren run.

Golgol Mebrahtu grabbed his first A-League goal on his Melbourne Heart debut to sink Perth Glory 1-0 at AAMI Park.

Mebrahtu, making his 27th A-League appearance but first for Heart, was introduced in the 78th minute and netted 11 minutes later.

The former Gold Coast United attacker struck on the counter-attack to decide an otherwise uninspiring affair.

John Aloisi's side jumped above the Glory, last season's beaten Grand Finalists, and into sixth place thanks to their first win in four matches.
