Singapore hopes of making the semi-finals of the Youth Newspaper Cup in Vietnam were left hanging by a thread after they played out a 0-0 draw with Thailand on Monday.

Robin Chitrakar's men have now picked up just one point from their two Group A games in the Under-21 tournament, and will need the Thais to lose to the Vietnam Youth Newspaper Team by more than five goals for them to make the semis.

In a fairly open encounter, both sides had their share of chances to grab all three points, but it was Singapore playmaker Faris Ramli who arguably came the closest when his excellent first-half effort was well saved by Pathomtat Sudpraset.

The game was however marred in the 88th minute when Thailand's Khritmat Sompen was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Shamil Sharif, leading to a brief melee between both sides.

Over in Group B, Laos were eliminated from the tournament after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC, their second loss in two games.

The Laotians deservedly took the lead in the 32nd minute when Khounta Sivongthong scored with a spectacular strike, but Sydney came back strongly after the break and equalised five minutes after the hour mark, when Chris Naumoff met a cross from Luke Clifford and sent a fantastic volley into the back of the net.

Three minutes from time, Brian Dene's charges went on to grab all three points when Josh MacDonald met a delivery from the right and headed home.

Sydney will now vie with Malaysia for top spot when both sides meet on Wednesday.
