Vietnam will take on defending Suzuki Cup champions Malaysia next Tuesday, before playing 2010 runners-up Indonesia over two legs on September 15 and 22 as coach Phan Thanh Hung seeks to fine-tune his side for the region's most-illustrious tournament.
And in the clearest indication that his side are now getting down to business, Hung has included Hanoi striker Vinh, who earned legendary status when his late header gave Vietnam handed Vietnam the title back in 2008 after a 3-2 aggregate win over Thailand.
Vinh's club team-mate Pham Thanh Luong and Khatoco Khanh Hoa winger Le Tan Tai, who are regarded as the best midfielders in the V-League at the moment, have both been called up as well, along with veteran defenders Nguyen Van Bien and Dao Van Phong.
Hung has also decided to give uncapped trio Nguyen Gia Tu, Pham Nguyen Sa and Nguyen Quoc Long a chance to stake a claim for a place in his final squad, while Hanoi T&T's Duong Hong Son and Saigon Xuan Thanh goalkeeper Bui Tan Troung are expected to fight it out for the number one spot.
