Despite playing a part in Juventus' charge to the Serie A title last season, Del Piero was not offered a contract extension with the Bianconeri. His departure from the club, for which he scored 208 goals in 513 appearances, was followed by interest from all over Europe and more recently in the Australasia region.
With the closure of the summer transfer window, interest from the likes of Glasgow Celtic, Tottenham and Swiss Super League side Scion are believed to have cooled, although as a free agent, the Italian is still available to sign for them. However, Pignata told Sky Sport Italia that Del Piero's heart is set on signing for Sydney.
"I am optimistic. He still hasn't signed, but he wants to," he revealed.
"Between tonight and tomorrow we will settle the final details, it is a work in progress."
Premier League club Liverpool are in dire need of established striking options and have been linked to former star Michael Owen as well as Del Piero. The Sydney chief excutive confirmed the Reds' interest in his target, but remained confident the 37 year old would turn down Brendan Rodgers' side.
"Offers from England? Liverpool is a great club, but Australia is a big country," Pignata stated.
