Del Piero, who was part of the Italy squad that won the FIFA World Cup in 2006, spent 19 seasons at Juventus and scored 286 goals in 698 games for the Serie A outfit.

However, he was released at the end of last season after failing to convince the Bianconeri hierarchy he could still play a role for them, and has been linked with a move to several Asian sides, including Thai giants Muangthong United.

Nonetheless, that move failed to materialise and it now appears Sydney are serious in their interest in signing Del Piero as their marquee signing, according to CEO Tony Pignata.

"We're going to go for it as hard as we can," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. "The board is 100% behind this.

"We believe he's the perfect marquee player. We've already made an approach to his management team and we're waiting to hear back.

"This is not a gimmick, it's deadly serious. To get a player of his stature would be huge, and we know that."

Sydney could face a real fight on their hands for Del Piero's services from Swiss Super League outfit Sion, after sporting director Marco Degennaro revealed his team are also keen on the 37-year-old, having already sealed a deal for former Italy international Gennaro Gattuso earlier in the summer.

"After the arrival of the important Gattuso, the club want to try and do something special," Degennaro told Sky Sport Italia. "First, in Switzerland, and then the [UEFA] Champions League.

"We expect to close [negotiations] tomorrow [Thursday] or the next day when he comes to a decision. What have we done to try and convince him?

"Gattuso has helped and then, the proximity as Switzerland is close to Turin and can give him the opportunity to win without leaving Europe."

Sydney have had plenty of success luring marquee names to the A-League in the past, with Dwight Yorke, Juninho Paulista and Benito Carbone just some of the players that have played for the Sky Blues since the club was founded.
