The Red Warriors started the day only six points behind their title rivals with five games in hand, and got off to a perfect start against the struggling Sabahawks when Rizal Fahmi opened the scoring in the 15th minute after he found space inside the area to nod home a Badri Radzi freekick.
And while Kelantan were expected to run all over their opponents, Sabah were actually providing stern resistance, especially considering they had conceded 13 goals in their last two games.
Nonetheless, Bojan Hodak's men were never in danger of losing their lead and they duly went on to wrap up all three points near the end when Indra Putra Mahayuddin grabbed his side's second from another Badri delivery.
Perak moved up to third on the table with a 2-1 win over Sarawak, courtesy of goals from Albert Ebosse Bodjongo and Michal Kubala, who cancelled out Azizan Saperi's strike.
Goals from Faizal Abu Bakar and Vedran Gerc helped Kedah get back to winning ways after a recent poor run of form with a 2-1 win over Kuala Lumpur, who scored through a Zakaria Charara penalty.
Elsewhere, Terengganu's recent slump continued with a 2-2 draw against PKNS FC. The Turtles went ahead after just three minutes when Asha'ri Samsuddin nodded a Joseph Kalang Tie corner into the path of Shukor Jusoh to convert, only for it to be cancelled out by a Fauzan Dzulkifli header on the half-hour mark.
Fauzan was causing all sorts of problems for the Terengganu backline and soon won a penalty after he was brought down in the area by Faizal Muhammad, which was converted by Michael Nicoise to give PKNS the lead.
However, Terengganu showed plenty of resolve in the second half and grabbed a share of the spoils at the death when Asha'ri nodded home a freekick from talismanic playmaker Ismail Faruqi.
Finally, Negri Sembilan were held to a 1-1 draw at T-Team. Negri went ahead when Jean-Emmanuel Effa-Owona scored with a lovely chip after delicately controlling a 50-yard pass on his chest, but the visitors failed to hold on to all three points as Badrul Hisani laid on a good ball for Faiz Subri to drill home an equaliser.
In Friday's action, Johor FC recorded a much-needed 1-0 win over Felda United and are now just one point away from moving out of the relegation zone.
