The role is, however, not unfamiliar to Kasimov, who had a previous stint as head coach of Uzbekistan from 2009 to 2010, before leaving to join Uzbek giants Bunyodkor.

Kasimov will now have precious little time to prepare his new charges for Uzbekistan's next World Cup qualifying game against Lebanon on Friday.

The depature of Abramov has shocked many after he enjoyed a relatively successful spell with Uzbekistan, leading them to a fourth-place finish in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup - their best ever position in the tournament - as well as to top spot in their group in the third round of World Cup qualifiers.

Uzbekistan will have to contend with Iran, Lebanon, Qatar and traditional powerhouses Korea Republic in their bid to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
