Heading into the game at the Khao Plong Stadium 11 points behind Muangthong but with four matches in hand, Buriram raced to a two-goal lead inside the opening half-hour courtesy of goals from Suriya Domtaisong and Frank Acheampong.

Chainat provided sterner resistance in the second half and managed to keep the Thunder Castle at bay for much of the period, until the 83rd minute when Acheampong grabbed his second to wrap up the victory.

However, Buriram's victory was soured two minutes from time when vice-captain Suchao Nuchnum received his marching orders after picking up a second booking.

Nonetheless, the three points were enough to see Attaphol Buspakom's charges climb to third in the table ahead of Bangkok Glass, whose inconsistent campaign continued with a 0-0 draw at home to TOT.

The Glass Rabbits have so far won five, drawn six and lost two of their matches and are already seven points behind Muangthong, who play Pattaya United on Sunday.

BEC Tero Sasana remain in second place, a point ahead of Buriram, after a 1-1 draw with BBCU at the Thephasadin Stadium.

Things were initially looking good for the hosts as they took the lead right on the stroke of halftime through defender Jose Franco, but they ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils as Pichet In-bang grabbed a 78th-minute equaliser for Chula.

Finally, Esan United moved up to 9th after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Thai Port, with the only goal of the game coming after seven minutes from Wuttichai Tathong.
