Penn Orji turned out to be the savior for Kingfisher East Bengal scoring a brace in the 25th and 74th minute after Air India had equalised early in the second half through Henry Ezeh.
Air India started the match without Sandesh Gadkari, Mohammed Shafi and Kali Aluadeen while East Bengal missed the services of Mehtab Hussain who were ruled out due to suspension.
East Bengal dominated early on, with Robin Singh's header hitting the post 13th minute. Trevor Morgan's men continued to press and eventually went ahead in the 34th minute when Orji fired home after defender Pratik Chowdhury failed to clear.
In the 34th minute Robin Singh struck the post a second time before, on 51 minutes, Air India drew level courtesy of Ezeh's strike.
Not to be outdone however, East bengal roared back to secure all three points late on, Man of the Match Orji bagging his second of the game following an astute Sanju Pradhan pass.
