Speaking at the press conference of the official unveiling of the team and coaching staff at the Jalan Besar stadium in front of a throng of media personnel, "The Dazzler" believes that his selection of a seasoned squad coupled with youthful additions will rise to the challenges from outfits across the Causeway.
"Our ambition is to finish in the top five in the Malaysian League and we will try our best to qualify for some of the cup finals too," Sundramoorthy declared.
"This is a new team but we have a lot of good and seasoned players and with the right guidance and good training, we should be able to achieve it.
"I think it's a realistic target for the first year considering that we have a brand new team gelling together and especially after being out for 17 years.
While names such as skipper Shahril Ishak, Hariss Harun and Shaiful Esah were long mooted to be penciled into the M-league squad, others such as forward Agu Casmir, defender Sevki Sha'ban and NFA Under-18 frontman Pravin Guanasagaran were surprise inclusions in the 28-man squad.
Sundram, while admitting that some players chose to continue their careers in the S-League due to "personal reasons", dismissed suggestions that others had a say in handpicking the squad to represent Singapore's colours in the M-League after a 17-year absence.
"It is always difficult to come up with names and we started work on this way back a couple of months ago," he said.
"But I was instrumental in selecting the players for the Malaysian Cup."
Addressing concerns over the strengths and weaknesses of their counterparts, the former Basel midfielder added that he is confident of the groundwork undertaken by his coaching staff to adequately prepare his team against their Malaysian rivals.
"We have been keeping tabs on the Malaysian players and we have played against the Malaysian national team so many times we know them inside out," Sundram opined.
"But we have done our own research and I know how most of the sides and their players."
The former Young Lions chief also conceded that the majority of his players would have to adapt to the partisan and raucous atmosphere generated by the Malaysian fans.
"Certain sides will be difficult for the players with the crowd being very wild and noisy but that's' the beauty of football," Sundram remarked.
"It will be good for the players to experience such atmospheres."
The former Kedah and Kelantan schemer is also hoping to kick-start preparations ahead of their January campaign after a short sojourn for his newly assembled outfit.
"Some players have played without a break for two years so we will let them rest for a week before we train for four weeks and hopefully it will be enough for us," Sundram added.
Sundram also paid tribute to the Lions faithful for their continued support.
"I would like thank the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) for giving me the opportunity to lead the new team at the Malaysian Cup and the fans too who will come support us," he added.
"Without the fans, football will not be a success."
Sundram will be assisted in the dug-out by former international colleague Kadir Yahya.
LIONSXII skipper Shahril Ishak is relishing the prospect of Singapore once again pitting their wits against Malaysian club sides.
"It's good to be here and I signed a one-year contract and I'm looking forward to playing in the M-League," he said.
"After a 17-year absence, we are back and it feels really good to be here again."
Hariss admitted that it was a privilege to be named in the squad and to be made vice- captain, although he conceded that he barely has any recollection of the heady Malaysian Cup days.
"I was too young to remember the Malaysia Cup then but I watched a lot of videos on YouTube whenever I had the time and I also listened to my uncle and father who told me so many stories about the Malaysian Cup," Hariss explained.
"It's an honour to be named vice-captain and we will do our best but it's important to play well for Singapore."
