India go down to Pakistan in opener

India suffered a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the opening match of the first ever SAFF U-16 Championship played on Monday at the Dharsath Stadium in Kathmandu.

Mansoor Khan scored the winning goal for the Pakistan in the 20th minute.

It was all to play for the Indians, but they failed to capitalise on the chances that came their way. Trailing by a goal, India Under-16 Boys showed great temperament and character, and dictated the terms in the second half.

As many as six chances were squandered by the Indians strikers. Daniel's twice attempt was clawed away for a corner by the rival goalkeeper, while Vanlalduatsanga hit the crossbar as India failed to start their campaign on a winning note in the Group A.

India will take on Maldives in the second and the final group league match on August 5.

‘’We conceded a very soft goal. The result could have been better had we utilised the chances that came our way,’’ said Under-16 coach, Thomas Joseph.
