Gao put Shenhua ahead just before the half-hour and then added a second in the 89th minute to help his side end the opening weekend of the season in second spot, behind champions Guangzhou Evergrande.

Sunday's other two Super League matches finished in 1-1 draws.

Tianjin Taida were indebted to a 90th-minute leveller from Xinxin Wang to salvage a point from their home game with Guangzhou R&F, who had taken a seventh-minute lead through Brazilian Davi.

Meanwhile, Liaoning were unable to hold on to the 18th-minute advantage given to them by Kevin Oris as they were pegged back by a 45th-minute Lei Wu equaliser for visiting Shanghai SIPG.
