Having seen second-placed Muangthong United held to a 1-1 draw against Chonburi a day earlier, the Thunder Castle visited the Khao Plong Stadium knowing a win would be a huge boost to their title prospects.
However, they found themselves behind after nine minutes when Sumanya Purisay converted an excellent cross to put the hosts in front, only for Buriram to equalise in the 31st minute when Suchao Nutnum capitalised on an error by opposition goalkeeper Kritsakorn Kerdpol to score.
The visitors then took the lead four minutes before the break through an Osmar Barba penalty, after a Chainat defender was penalised for handball inside the box, but Chainat hit back in the 51st minute through a Seon Power effort.
But seven minutes later, Charyl Chappuis popped up to score Buriram's third, which ultimately proved enough to hand them the three points.
Bangkok Glass continued their recent rise and are now up to fifth place after beating Chiangrai United 2-0 at the Leo Stadium, their third win in four games.
Following a goalless first half, Australian import Goran Subara put the Glass Rabbits ahead in the 73rd minute, before Lazarus Kaimbi added a second ten minutes later to seal the victory.
Elsewhere, Police United backed up on last weekend's impressive 2-2 draw against Muangthong by claiming a crushing 5-2 win at Suphanburi.
In a game they were always in control of, the visitors broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark through a Paitoon Nontadee strike, before Felipe Ferreira struck eight minutes later to double their tally.
Wuttichai Tathong did manage to pull one back for the hosts five minutes after the break, but Chumpol Bua-ngam netted two minutes later to restore Police's two-goal cushion, before Michael Murcy made it 4-1 in the 66th minute.
Suphanburi hit back again ten minutes from time when veteran forward Sutee Suksomkit found the back of the net, but the night belonged to the Silver Shields and it was they who rounded off the scoring in injury-time when Surachart Sareepim added a fifth.
In Sunday's final game, TOT and Samut Songkhram played out a 0-0 draw that does neither side any good in their respective bids to climb away from the relegation zone.
