Having never beaten Indonesia in any of their previous meetings, the Azkals looked to have a good chance of rectifying that in Wednesday's game at the Manahan Stadium given the huge strides they have taken in recent years, which includes back-to-back semi-final appearances at the last two AFF Suzuki Cups.
However, they were missing several key players like Stephan Schrock, Javier Patino and Neil Etheridge and the Merah Putih made the most of it by taking the lead a minute after the half-hour mark; Stefano Lilipaly receiving the ball inside the box and drilling it across the face of goal to leave Greg Nwokolo with a simple tap-in.
And as Philippines struggled to really threaten their opponents' goal, it was the hosts who continued to be in control of proceedings, and they duly doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when a corner was flicked on to Muhammad Roby, who made no mistake in sending a glancing header past Eduard Sacapano and into the back of the net.
It was not all doom and gloom for the visitors however as coach Michael Weiss used the friendly as an opportunity to blood a couple of youngsters and fringe players, including the likes of Jerry Barbaso, Mark Hartmann and debutant Amani Aguinaldo.
