Considering they are currently the worst-ranked team in Southeast Asia, many expected O Sol Nascente to struggle against their more-experienced opponents.

However, they made a mockery of those pre-qualification predictions by racing to a 2-0 lead before halftime thanks to a brace from Murilo de Almeida.

The Persiraja Banda Aceh striker opened the scoring in the 39th minute when he sent a glancing header into the bottom corner, before planting a shot into the back of the net from inside the box just before the break.

And despite the comfortable lead, Timor Leste showed no signs of letting up in the second half, and piled on the goals courtesy of a Adelino double and a penalty from Alan Leandro.

Cambodia pulled one back in injury-time when they too were awarded a spot-kick, but Keo Sokngon's successful conversion proved to be a mere consolation.

In Friday's other qualifier, hosts Myanmar toiled to a 1-0 win over a resilient Brunei.

Following a goalless first half during which Myanmar enjoyed the majority of possession but Brunei created more chances, Yan Aung Win scored what proved to be the winner five minutes from time when he found the back of the net from just inside the box.

The qualifiers continue on Sunday when Myanmar play Timor Leste and Laos start their campaign with a match against Cambodia.
