An Heurelho Gomes own goal was enough for Stoke City to secure a 1-0 victory over Watford in their English Premier League encounter at Vicarage Road on Sunday.
- Watford 0 Stoke 1
- Gomes scores OG
- Score remains 1-0 until HT
- Britos sent off for Hornets
In an uninspiring early kick off, Stoke battled to record a victory and moved into the top half of the table for the first time this season courtesy of Heurelho Gomes' own goal.
Watford were poor throughout the fixture. with many of their players looking like they didn't want the ball at their feet.
With every pass in the first half, Stoke looked to get forward and they were duly rewarded for their endeavors away from home – in a new 3-4-3 formation deployed by Mark Hughes.
Gomes wasn't at fault for the goal, with Charlie Adam's header from Xherdan Shaqiri's corner hit the base of the post before ricocheting off the Brazilian and rolling into the net.
There was controversy at the end as Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri ignored Mark Hughes' handshake, which provided action to a game that most fans who traveled to Vicarage Road won't remember fondly.
Watford had defender Miguel Britos sent off in the closing stages for a second yellow card after Gomes had saved well from Bruno Martins Indi but that was the most noteworthy action of the second-half, besides Giannelli Imbula's fizzing 25 yards effort on the hour mark.
The win for the Potters puts them in tenth place, while Watford remain in eighth.
