A fantastic atmosphere resonated inside the Commerzbank-Arena as Borussia Dortmund dominated possession in the early stages, without really creating openings in the first 15 minutes.

Yet, BVB perhaps could have been ahead after 19 minutes when Andre Schurrle used his pace to burst through on goal from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pass, only to see his effort saved by Lukas Hradecky.

Frankfurt were well organised at the back though Dortmund’s relentless pressing was forcing Niko Kovac’s men into mistakes. The visitors would again go close when Adrian Ramos saw his header go narrowly wide after Schurrle’s cross from the left in the 29th minute.

Aubayemang then volleyed a great chance wide two minutes later as the home side’s defence felt the strain. However, Szabolcs Huszti nearly gave Frankfurt the lead when his fierce shot stung the palms of Roman Weidenfeller in the 38th minute.

Seconds after the interval, the visitors were stunned when Huszti slammed home from the edge of the box over Weidenfeller after superb work from Timothy Chandler down the right-hand side.

The home team were on top and nearly doubled their advantage when Mijat Gacinovic curled an effort just wide in the 54th minute. Yet, BVB responded when Ramos’ diving header trickled wide.

Aubameyang then went close when he used his strength to force his way through on goal from Marco Reus’ pass, however, he was unable to poke the ball past Hradecky. Haris Seferovic had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in the 77th minute but missed the target.

Aubameyang then made the hosts pay when he equalised with a header from Ousmane Dembele’s excellent cross. However, Frankfurt struck back straight away as Seferovic fired home the winner from the edge of the area following a Huszti assist in the 79th minute.

Dembele then hit the crossbar with virtually the last kick of the game as Frankfurt battled to a gutsy 2-1 victory.
