Bremen, Borussia MG safely through

Bremen and Borussia MG both advanced to the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night, though Schalke 04 missed out.

Struggling VfB Stuttgart got the better of fourth-tier Regionalliga opponents Carl Ziess Jena with a first-half goal from Austria international Martin Harnik before Romanian midfielder Alexandru Maxim added an injury-time second.

Eintracht Braunschweig were comfortable in their 4-0 victory over fifth-tier Oberliga side Reutlingen, with Gerrit Holtmann scoring a brace alongside strikes from Emil Berggreen and Orhan Ademi.

Schalke 04 were the losers in an all-Bundesliga clash with Borussia MG, with goals coming either side of halftime from Lars Stindl and Thorgan Hazard in a 2-0 win.

Bremen came out on top of a tightly-contested clash with 1. FC Köln, where Nigerian forward Anthony Ujah’s 23rd-minute goal was the difference between the two sides, giving Die Werderaner a 1-0 win.
