There were Capital One Cup wins for Manchester City, Liverpool and Southampton, but Manchester United were dumped out on penalties.
Manchester City blew past Crystal Palace with a 4-1 win, thanks to goals from Wilfried Bony, Kevin De Bruyne, Kelechi Iheanacho (who also scored against Palace in the Premier League this season), and a Yaya Toure penalty. Damien Delaney pulled one back for the Eagles before teenager Manu Garcia added a fifth.
For the second time this season Liverpool needed just a single goal to defeat Bournemouth, with Nathaniel Clyne’s 17th-minute effort sealing a 1-0 win for the Reds.
Southampton got the better of Premier League strugglers Aston Villa with second-half goals from Japanese defender Maya Yoshida and Italian forward Graziano Pelle, before Scott Sinclair put away a late penalty for the Villans.
Manchester United’s clash with Middlesbrough was still 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes and extra time, and went all the way to the penalty shootout.
Andrea Pereira scored for United, but Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young all failed from the spot, allowing Grant Leadbitter, Stewart Downing and Ben Gibson to hand Boro a 3-1 win on penalties.
