Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria has revealed it was never part of his plan to leave Real Madrid and join Manchester United.
The revelation will not come as a shock to many people and confirms a long-held suspicion about the transfer that was completed in August last year.
"My intention was always to stay, not to leave. I don't know what happened. It is more to do with agents. These things happen in football," Di Maria told Marca.
"I left how I left but what I took with me was the beautiful final ovation at the Bernabeu, and I'm content with that.
"It was a beautiful time in Madrid, having won La Decima. It was also special for that ovation in my last game and I'll always be grateful for what the fans gave me.
"All I did was try to make people happy. If I get a good or bad reception, that's up to them. I always tried to give my best in the Madrid shirt.
"If I score at Bernabeu I won't celebrate it. It's a matter of respect for those who were my fans and my partners."
PSG travel to the Bernabeu on November 3 for the Champions League Group A fixture after holding Real to a 0-0 draw in Paris a week ago, and Di Maria is confident of the French club's chances.
"PSG can win the Champions League. Players want the trophy and the club wants the trophy. We'll see a brave PSG at the Bernabeu," he added.
