After relinquishing their Premier League title to Manchester United earlier in the week, there was a subdued atmosphere at the Etihad.
City did their best to get the crowd going to the home fans were rocking when a clever one-two between Samir Nasri and David Silva set-up Aguero for the opener.
Toure then doubled City's lead with a terrific long range effort in the second half before West Ham scored a consolation goal through Andy Carroll's stoppage time strike.
Hart - 5.5
The Manchester City goalkeeper's biggest contribution to the match in the opening 45 minutes was to stand, hands on hips, outside his goal as West Ham hardly mustered up any chances.
The second half was a bit of a different story but it did take up until past he 75th minute before the England international made his first meaningful save - a good reflex stop to deny Carroll on the goal-line. Hart appeared to injure his back making the save and maybe that had something to do with him letting Carroll's fiercely hit shot go through him and bobble into goal in stoppage time.
Zabaleta - 6.5
Will have been disappointed at the number of times Jarvis was able to beat him and get crosses into the box for West Ham, but Zabaleta was brilliant going forward. Needlessly got himself booked after reacting angrily to O'Brien's challenge from behind late in the game by pushing the West Ham man in the chest.
Had a good game and covered for Zabaleta excellently whenever the attacking full-back was caught out of position.
Lescott - 7
Defended against Carroll intelligently. The City defender loses out on height to the West Ham so he made sure he defended him with a low stance and denied him space to get on the end of West Ham crosses.
Clichy - 6
Could have got forward more often especially in the first half when West Ham just didn't turn up.
Yaya Toure - 7
Didn't have his usually dominant game but scored a cracking goal to seal the points for Man City. When the ball arrived to him on the right hand side of the box, there didn't look like there was too much danger but he dribble the ball across the box before drilling it into the far corner.
Barry - 6.5
Connected with his short passes well but wasn't needed as an extra holding midfielder because West Ham offered very little in direct play.
Silva (Off 78') - 7.5
Pulled the strings for Man City in midfield. He always seemed to pick out the right pass and his link-up play with Aguero and Tevez was very good.
Tevez (Off 83') - 7
His movement and hard work was a bonus for City. Might have been more clinical in front of goal especially when Aguero found him in space in front of goal, but he stabbed it straight at Collins.
Nasri (Off 87') - 7.5
It remains to be seen whether Nasri has a future at City next season following a campaign dogged by public criticism from his manager. The France international at least performed well in Saturday's 2-1 win over West Ham, dragging defenders out of position and combining well with team-mates. Set-up Aguero for City's opener.
Aguero - 8
Best player on the park for City although how he only finished the match with only one goal is incredible. He definitely showed good finishing for his first goal from close range but he was guilty of missing two very easy chances later in the match with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Milner (On 78') - 6.5
Came on for the excellent Silva and could not replicate the range and timing of his team-mate's passing.
Kolo Toure (On 87') - N/A
Garcia (On 83') - N/A
Jaaskelainen - 7
Made some decent saves no doubt but nothing spectacular.
Demel - 6.5
Got caught out of position too many times but did make some good last ditch blocks to save certain situations from getting worse including in the 87th minute to deny Aguero a shot in front of goal.
Reid - 7
A physical presence at the back which City - and in particularly Silva - felt the full force of. Won his fair share of headers in the box and made some crucial tackles on Aguero to stop the scoreboard from ticking over.
Collins - 7
Had to be alert at all times and did especially well when West Ham were chasing the game at 1-0 down. Collins stepped in on numerous occasions to deny City good counter attacking opportunities.
O'Brien - 5
Was never able to stamp his authority on the match which was a shame for West Ham as they did enjoy some success down the left flank through Jarvis. Perhaps, if O'Brien had offered more support the Hammers could've delivered more quality crosses from that flank for Carroll to feed on. Was booked for a late challenge on Zabaleta as well.
O'Neil - 7
Created a couple of chances for West Ham and provided a consistent passing option in midfield for West Ham who only managed 38% of the ball during the game.
Nolan - 6.5
Never seemed to be on the same page with Carroll and the pair wasted a few good West Ham chances when they failed to link-up successfully.
Diame - 6.5
Showed coolness and calmness on the ball and his physicality also troubled Yaya Toure a little bit. He needed to get more involved in the build-up play for West Ham to really get at City.
Jarvis - 7.5
Surprisingly, Jarvis had plenty of joy down the left as he gave Zabaleta all he could handle. Some of his crosses were not as accurate as he would've liked but he pretty much beat his man every time in the one-v-one situation.
Vaz Te (Off 66') - 6
Forgettable performance with the only highlight a couple of good crosses from the right. Hauled off by ‘Big Sam' on 66 minutes.
Carroll - 7.5
You have to give Carroll credit. He worked his socks off and went for every ball. His goal was well taken too. He managed to bring the ball down in a crowded box and surprised Hart in goal with a quickly taken shot.
Collison (On 66') - 6
Got himself booked under silly circumstances by stopping Aguero from taking a quick throw-in.
Taylor (On 81') - 6
Came on and had a very good chance to put some pressure on City immediately with a free-kick delivery. However, it was so poor City went straight down the other end of the pitch and almost scored on the counter.
C.Cole (On 81') - N/A
