Burak Yilmaz's early strike was cancelled out by Jermaine Jones just before the interval at the Ali Sami Yen.
Both sides created decent chances to win the match but in the end it was Galatasaray who will have to go to Gelsenkirchen next month and score if they are to progress to the next round.
Fatih Terim won't be happy with the 1-1 score line and he will not be too pleased with Galatasaray's defending as well. The warning signs were there right from the kick-off when Jones was allowed to run into the penalty box and fire a shot - albeit from a tight angle - at goal which Muslera did well to parry in the first minute.
Galatasaray's full-backs on the night (Sarıoglu and Riera) played an important role in getting the home side into good areas on the pitch including for their goal but unfortunately for the Turkish it was also a defensive mistake which allowed Schalke to grabbed a precious away goal.
It was Nounkeu who made the error - giving the ball away high up the pitch allowing Schalke to hit them on the counter and get their equalising goal.
Muslera - 7 | Nounkeu - 4 | Semih Kaya - 6.5 | Sabri Sarıoglu (Off 84') - 6.5 | Riera - 6.5
Wesley Sneijder looked eager to impress on his Champions League debut for Galatasaray but overall he had a very ineffective game and was subbed at half-time. Galatasaray frequently found themselves out-numbered in midfield but Drogba's superb hold-up play and link-up with Altıntop meant the home side did create chances especially in the first half.
Melo did a decent job in the defensive midfield role although it was the away side which enjoyed the majority of the ball during the 1-1 draw.
Hamit Altıntop (Off 66') - 7 | Selcuk Inan - 6.5 | Felipe Melo - 6.5 | Sneijder (Off 45') - 5
Quite frankly, Drogba wasted his time playing in China. The Ivory Coast legend is still a quality striker especially when asked to play up front on his own and bring team-mates into games. He was responsible for starting and creating a number of chances and moves for Galatasaray and it was no surprise that he had a big hand in the only goal of the game for the Turks. No prizes also for guessing who scored Galatasaray's goal - another terrific strike from Yilmaz to stake his claim as one of the competition's best strikers this campaign.
Drogba - 7.5 | Burak Yilmaz - 7.5
Amrabat came on for the quiet Sneijder and made much more of an impact than the Dutchman.
The one negative is that he picked up a silly booking early into his cameo appearance for a poor foul on Farfan.
Meanwhile, former Arsenal defender Eboue came on but did not have the best of games from a defensive standpoint.
SUBS: Amrabat (On 45') - 6 | Eboue (On 66') - 6 | Umut Bulut (On 84') - N/A
The Germans will be grateful for the performance of goalkeeper Hildebrand after Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Galatasaray. The goalkeeper was sharp throughout and was only beaten by a wonder strike.
Meanwhile, Schalke defender Howedes' presence at both ends of the pitch was a factor in the game and his towering header which left Muslera stranded in the Galatasaray goal deserved better from Huntelaar who was too slow to react with the goal at his mercy.
Hildebrand - 8 | Howedes - 7 | Matip - 6.5 | Kolasinac - 6.5 | Hoger - 6.5
Schalke's midfield was quite impressive during the 1-1 draw with Galatasaray. However, the player who shone the brightest had to be Draxler despite a very well-taken goal from Jones to earn the Germans a valuable away goal.
Draxler basically pulled the strings in midfield for Schalke and created numerous chances and opportunities for his team-mates. The movement of Bastos was also good and allowed Jones to make intelligent runs into dangerous areas.
Bastos - 7 | Jones - 7.5 | Draxler (Off 84') - 8 | Neustadter - 6.5
While Farfan had a reasonably effective game, the main talking point from Schalke's attack has to be the poor performance of Huntelaar. The Dutchman was wasteful in front of goal which was unlike him but what was disappointing was his poor use of the ball especially on the counter attack where he made several poor decisions.
There were a number of occasions where Schalke broke forward with numbers but when the ball came to Huntelaar, he put his head down and tried to take on a defender and therefore failed to spot a team-mate in a better position.
Farfan - 7 | Huntelaar (Off 75') - 5
Pukki came on for the profligate Huntelaar with 15 minutes to go and enjoyed some good touches and passes but ultimately did not have enough time to really make an impact on the game.
SUBS: Pukki (On 75') - 6.5 | Barnetta (On 84') - N/A
