Sunderland scored from their only real opportunity of the game from a Steven Fletcher effort but Luis Suarez salvaged a point for the Reds in the 71st minute after a poor clearance from Titus Bramble.
Both teams tried to steal a match winner but there were no clear cut chances and the spoils were shared.
Simon Mignolet - 7
100% focused on the match and kept out almost everything that Liverpool threw at him. Unfortunate not to get his clean sheet after the ball bobbled off Bramble's shin for Suarez to stab home the equalizer.
Danny Rose (Off 72') - 5
Could not cope with the unpredictable Sterling and was always a second too slow to react. His only saving grace was his last ditch tackles.
Craig Gardner - 7
Not playing in his usual position on the pitch but it was his moment of brillance that created Sunderland's only chance of the match, waltzing past Johnson and Allen to feed Fletcher for Sunderland's goal.
John O'Shea - 6.5
Organized his back line well and was not too troubled by Borini and Suarez as the Liverpool duo don't seem to be on the same page at the moment.
Carlos Cuellar (Off 46') - 5.5
His keeper rushed out of his line and spared him the blushes after his weak header back almost gave Borini an opportunity to grab his first goal in the Premier League.
Lee Cattermole - 6.5
Carried out his manager's instructions well by spreading out play to his wingers and was a pest to the Liverpool midfielders all game.
Sebastian Larsson - 6
Great awareness of where his team mates were on the pitch and his deliveries from the dead ball situations were immaculate. His manager would have wanted more from him going forward though.
Jack Colback - 6
An intelligent footballer who keeps his head up and knows what to do with the ball.
James McClean - 5.5
Had no joy in going forward with the resilient Kelly in his way and having to repeatedly track back to help deal with the threat from Sterling.
Steven Fletcher (Off 86') - 7
Kept picking up knocks here and there which affected his game play a bit. Could have gotten himself an early goal if he kept his eye on the ball when Johnson ducked out of a header. Great determination from him to fight his way to get to the end of the Gardner cross to score.
Stephane Sessegnon - 6
Had a go at Johnson all game and although he always had an extra yard to work with, there was no end product.
Titus Bramble (On 46') - 4
The clumsy natured Bramble played the perfect "assist" for Suarez and cost his team dear. Perhaps it is time for him to seriously consider retirement as he always drag his team down, regardless of which team he plays for.
Fraizer Campbell (On 72') - 5
Did not have the guts to take on the Liverpool defenders and was more of a liability coming off the bench.
Louis Saha (On 86')
Pepe Reina - 6
Could not do anything about the goal, but barely broke a sweat after as the Black Cats did not test him at all.
Glen Johnson - 7
Defensively very solid and put in quality crosses even from the left back position. Rattled the crossbar in the second half after cutting in into his favored right foot.
Daniel Agger - 6.5
Watched the late runs of the Sunderland players into the box well and his aerial dominance made the night's work easier for Reina.
Martin Kelly - 6.5
Kept McClean quiet for most of the game and his only down side to his game if any, was that he could have provided more support going forward.
Martin Skrtel - 6
Given his aggression and his ability to anticipate any danger coming into the box, he should have done better for the Sunderland goal. He should have been first to the ball from the Gardner cross and not allowed Fletcher to get on the end of it.
Steven Gerrard - 6
Should Liverpool have cashed in on Gerrard a few seasons back? At the moment he looks like someone devoid of confidence but to be fair he was also unfortunate to see his long ranged effort clip the outside of the posts.
Joe Allen - 6.5
Tidied up the midfield for the Reds but could not make much of an impact going forward in his deep-lying midfield role.
Jonjo Shelvey - 6.5
Doesn't over elaborate on his football and kept things simple. His shots from distance however, were extremely weak and at times pathetic. Could have won it for the visitors with his first decent strike of the ball but it was straight at Mignolet.
Raheem Sterling - 9
He was the brightest spark in a Liverpool jersey once again, giving Rose a torrid time all game. He was superb down the flanks and showed great maturity on such young shoulders.
Fabio Borini (Off 64') - 5.5
Did not capitalize on a poor back pass and opted for power rather than placing the ball. Had a glorious chance to give Liverpool the lead a few minutes later but he fired straight at the keeper.
Luis Suarez - 6.5
Was at the right place and the right time and was the messiah for the Reds once more. Got booked for his diving antics which was nothing new, but who will Liverpool call upon for goals if Suarez eventually picks up a suspension or an injury?
Steward Downing (On 64') - 5
Not the super-sub that Brendan Rodgers hoped for, and he has yet to live up to his £20million price tag.
