Shay Given - 6.5
Probably still had a point to make to his former boss who left him out in the cold for months. Showed safe hands despite the slippery surface but walked out of Villa Park empty handed.
James Collins - 6.5
Quick to close down the danger but a lapse in concentration from a set piece allowed Lescott free in the box and Villa paid the price.
Richard Dunne (94' off) - 7.5
Did not give his former employers any clear opportunities on goal. On top of that, he turned out to be the player most likely to score in a Villa shirt, which doesn't speak too highly of his strikers.
Carlos Cuellar - 6.5
A decent left back performance from the big man who did not give Johnson much freedom down the flank. Could have snatched a point in stoppage time when he headed the ball narrowly over from a corner!
Alan Hutton - 6.5
Not easy to defend against the hardworking Milner and have a liability to the team playing in front of you but he coped well nonetheless, looking dangerous everything he went forward.
Gary Gardner - 6
Tried to break down City's play as he tracked runners from all over the pitch, but nobody can fault him for the loss as the difference in class and experience was simply too great.
Stiliyan Petrov - 6.5
A quiet day for the skipper who was stuck in his own half for most of the game.
Emile Heskey (69' off) - 4
Quiz: What do you get when a reputed target man plays in the wider areas of the pitch?
Ans : A lazy bum.
Marc Albrighton (78' off) - 5.5
A disappointing performance. It was bad enough not to test Kolarov going forward, but he allowed Johnson through without putting up a fight.
Darren Bent - 5
A meek little volley on the turn forced Hart into action after he was almost bored to death in this match. Went missing for 90 minutes and iIt was as though Villa played with a 4-4-0 formation.
Robbie Keane - 5
There was no happily ever after to his loan spell fairy tale at Villa Park and he may even have nightmares on his plane back to the US after his poor performance in this game.
Charles N'Zogbia (69' on) - 6.5
The outcome of the game might haven been very different if he was brought on at 0-0 instead of 0-1 as he would have injected more pace and runs down the flank.
Stephen Ireland (78' on)
Nathan Baker (94' on)
Joe Hart - 7
Barely had a thing to do till stoppage time when he was forced to make a few reflex saves to preserve City's precious one goal advantage.
Joleon Lescott - 8
Took an hour for City to find the back of the net, and it was from a set piece from the man who deserved to be the man of the match even without the goal.
Vincent Kompany - 7.5
Great defensive partnership with Lescott to keep Keane and Bent anonymous. It will be crucial to keep him fit in the coming weeks if City are serious about their title bid.
Aleksandar Kolarov - 6.5
Looked dangerous down the left coupled with his countless bursts down the left. He can improve on his set pieces though.
Pablo Zabaleta - 6
Faithfully did the overlapping runs down the right but did not impress. He'll never make first choice if he doesn't show
Gareth Barry - 7
Put in an energetic display in this match in an attempt to cement his starting XI berth. Did all the work after peeling away to the far post to set up Lescott for the only goal of the game.
Nigel De Jong - 6
Not the best person to entertain crowds but he did his job well, protecting the back four. Unfortunately it would be more bench warming duties for him once Yaya Toure returns from the Africa Nation's Cup.
James Milner - 7.5
Always the willing runner to track back to help out in defence and make the numbers going forward. What an extraordinary work rate this guy has!
Adam Johnson (84' off) - 6.5
Apparently not Roberto Mancini's favourite child, but showed everyone what he is capable of with his left foot, hitting the posts halfway through the first half.
David Silva (90' off) - 7.5
The technically gifted midfielder's runs were a handful for the Villa defence and his through passes were like knives through butter.
Sergio Aguero (89' off) - 7
The pocket dynamo had a couple of chances in the game but just lacked the finish. Nontheless, he is a valuable asset to the team running circles around defenders.
Samir Nasri (84' on)
Edin Dzeko (89' on)
Micah Richards (90' on)
