Man United vs Basel Player Ratings
Basel pulled off a shock result at Old Trafford as they looked to take a win home until Ashley Young's late goal saw the match end 3-3.
Man United
David De Gea - 7.5
Pulled off a few excellent saves to deny Basle from winning and couldn't do anything for the three goals conceded.
Patrice Evra - 6.5
Dangerous with runs on the overlap but could have done better when recovering. Allowed Fabian Frei to exploit the space behind him to cross in for Basle's second goal.
Phil Jones - 7.5
Was surprisingly the more stable of the two United center backs. Being made to work hard by Streller, Jones was up to every challenge. Helped United with yet another of his barnstorming runs, creating space for his strikers for the second goal.
Rio Ferdinand - 4
His poor man marking led to both Freis and Streller have an easy game. As the elder statesman in the United defence, he should have communicated and led the line better, but Ferdinand was slow and looked off the pace.
Fabio Da Silva (Off 68') - 6.5
He proved a valuable asset on the attack, setting up the first goal with a fine cross in, but his defending was susceptible and frequently let the Basle strikers have a free run down the flank.
Anderson (Off 81') - 6
Did well going forward but could have and should have done better in terms of defending and seemed to rely on his two other central midfielders to do that job.
Ryan Giggs (Off 61') - 7.5
Giggs performed well in the free role. Definitely one of the best United players, with a pinpoint through pass to leave Welbeck with an easy finish for the second goal.
Michael Carrick - 5
Frustrating performance by Carrick as he failed to track back to cover Basle's strikers, leaving his defenders exposed far too frequently.
Ashley Young - 7.5
Continued his excellent start to the season with the late equalizer to save United from further blushes. Put in an exceptional shift down the left flank that is becoming a norm for him.
Antonio Valencia - 6.5
Looked more comfortable back in his right-winger position but was forced to cover for Fabio after the young Brazilian was injured. Conceded a penalty with a poorly-timed tackle.
Danny Welbeck - 7
His goal poacher's instinct did not let him down tonight, leading up to the two goals where he was found unmarked, though he was a lot quieter in the second half. Was guilty of wasting many chances too.
Substitutes
Park Ji Sung (On 61') - 6
Spent 30 minutes on the field but failed to help his side with his hardworking runs.
Nani (On 68') - 7
Turned out to be a good substitute to bring on as he provided Young with the cross to equalise.
Dimitar Berbatov (On 82') - N/A
FC Basel
Yann Sommer - 6
Hardly troubled by the United strikers throughout the match other than the goals, which he could hardly help.
Park Joo Ho - 5.5
Looked overwhelmed on the flank by Valencia's speed and Fabio's overlapping runs, but managed to put them off well enough.
Aleksander Dragovic - 6
Not the best game he's had, with his lax marking contributing to the two early goals conceded. Stepped up later in the game, though, and prevented further damage.
David Abraham - 6
His no-nonsense clearances certainly helped Basle, but struggled to communicate with Dragovic at times when United threatened.
Markus Steinhofer - 7
Tasked to stop Young on the flank and did so admirably. Until the last few minutes when Young had a free header at goal.
Fabien Frei (Off 77') - 8
Scored from the corner with a cool half-volley and provided the second goal with a pinpoint cross. Dangerous movements floating in and out of the flanks to drag the United defenders out of place.
Cabral - 6
Was overwhelmed in the first half by United's passing game and had some rash tackles but did well in the second half holding back the tide of players in red.
Granit Xhaka - 6.5
Had an easy night around the less-hardworking Anderson. Xhaka did well in the deeper role, tracking the United players in front of goal well and closing them down early.
Marco Streller (Out 81') - 7.5
Distributed the ball scarily in the opening minutes, displaying near-psychic understanding with both Alexander and Fabian Frei. Should have done better when finishing and could have put his side in front early.
Alexander Frei - 7.5
Finished the game with two goals, the first a well-finished corner and the second a penalty to send De Gea the wrong direction.
Jacques Zoua - 7
Poor finishing from the Cameroonian, who did well to find himself outsmarting Ferdinand rather frequently. Should have done better for his team.
