Diaz hunting for signatures

Nick Diaz is targeting 100,000 signatures on his petition in the hope of getting his five year suspension removed.

Following testing positive for marijuana for the third time, the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Diaz from competition for five years.

The UFC veteran's petition to the White House needs at least 100,000 signatures in order to get an official response. The petition closes on Friday and Diaz is around 22,000 short of the mark.

Lucas Middlebrook, Diaz's attorney, said while it’s tough to know how serious the White House would take the petition, it could still have a positive effect.

"You never know what the effect of grassroots campaigns like this will have," Middlebrook told mmajunkie.com.

"But certainly they can only help, if not in the judicial sense, then at least to draw attention to the inequity involved in the process."
